Scholarship set up in memory of slain deputy

High school classmates of Vu Nguyen, whose friendship with the fallen Sacramento Sheriff’s Deputy was cemented with a cross-country road trip as teenagers, have organized a scholarship fund in his name.

“He was a person full of integrity and honesty,” said longtime friend Mike Henderson. “We did not want him to die in vain — to not have something to keep his memory alive.”

Henderson is helping to organize the Vu Nguyen Memorial Scholarship for Modesto High School students.

Sagen scholarship goes to Central grad

Serri Graslie, a sophomore at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., is the second recipient of the Peg Sagen Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship honors Peggy Sagen, the former editor of the Rapid City Journal. Sagen died of cancer in August of 2006.

Graslie, a 2006 graduate of Central High School, spent a summer as an intern at the Journal while she was in high school and knew Sagen. Read more…

Scholarship available for nursing students

Students pursing a master’s or doctoral degree in a nursing specialty are invited to apply for the Thomas Candler Scholarship.

The $1,500 one-year scholarship honors the founding member of the Quad-Cities Area Advance Practice Nurses and Physician Assistant Alliance.

Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better, complete an application form, submit a 250-word essay and provide two letters of recommendation. The application deadline is June 1. Borno budgets N300m for scholarship

The Borno government has earmarked N300 million in its 2008 budget for the award of scholarship to students in tertiary institutions.

The Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Abubakar Kyari, made this known Thursday in Maiduguri an interview with news men.

Alhaji Kyari said the award would enable the poor and the less privileged to benefit from that level of education.

The commissioner restated the resolve of Gov. Ali Sheriff’s administration to ensure that educational opportunities were provided majority of the people. Read more…

U of U student gets Truman Scholarship

A University of Utah student has been selected to receive the prestigious Truman Scholarship.

Ingrid Price is 1 of 65 students selected from 283 colleges and universities nationwide for the Truman Scholarship.

Price is a junior working toward an honors degree in political science and international studies. She was selected from among more than 3,000 applicants and nearly 600 nominees.

College Scholarships

Two are available from business group
The Route 40 Business Association is offering a scholarship for graduating seniors from Joppatowne, Edgewood, Aberdeen and Havre de Grace High schools.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a degree or certificate in a business-related field.

Applications, with a letter including college choice and status, community activities, awards and recognition, work and related achievements, career and educational goals and financial need for the scholarship, are required by April 7. Read more…

Foundation grants nearly $500,000 for arts

The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation has awarded roughly $496,000 in grants to 48 projects. These first-quarter grants are part of the foundation’s Arts, Culture and Education granting cycle.

These grants strengthen the quality of life in the community, Greater Kanawha President and CEO Becky Ceperley said.

The biggest grant, $45,000, goes to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, West Virginia Unit, to record textbooks on audio format.

Kilgore College grant to fund safety training

Kilgore College has received a $100,000 grant to fund the college’s Risk Management Institute.

Texas Mutual Insurance Co. awarded the grant to the college to offer free safety training to employees across East Texas, according to a press release from the college. Kilgore College is the third Texas college to be awarded the grant by the insurance company.

The institute is part of the Kilgore College Workforce Development Program. Martha Woodruff, program director, said the grant will cover all the costs of the safety training for one year.

“We plan on using every bit of (the grant),” Woodruff said. “It will allow us to provide some services that are greatly needed at no cost.” Read more…

Kiwanis grants future to Mariemont students

For more than 40 years, the Kiwanis Club of Mariemont, part of Kiwanis International, has been in the business of serving youth and their neighborhoods and developing young leaders.

A key recipient of their efforts has been the Mariemont City School District community.

Kiwanis members, along with faculty advisors, work with students in each of the five schools to facilitate community service opportunities and to develop future leaders. This effort is promoted through the Builders Clubs at the elementary schools and Junior High and the Key Club at Mariemont High School. Read more…

Oklahoma City Community College receives $1.72 million grant

Oklahoma City Community College has received a $1.72 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to fund a new college health careers program in clinical research.

The grant will give OCCC the opportunity to grant degrees and certificates in clinical research. College officials hope the program will serve as a national model.

Sonya Williams, the chairwoman of OCCC’s division of science and mathematics, says the program will create a pipeline of thousands of students able to fill much-needed jobs in the areas of clinical research and clinical trials. Read more…
