More students qualify for scholarships program

Massey University has reshaped the way it gives out general bursaries and scholarships to first-year students, allowing mature students to apply for the first time.

The new Top Achiever scholarships are divided into three categories - academic, sports and arts. The scholarships are worth $3000 each.

Massey University scholarships committee head Ken Milne said

the new system is more open and fair.

“We’re also taking a different approach to other universities in that we will be working with schools to identify high-achieving students at Year 12 level,” he said. “We will then be able to work with the successful applicants in their last year at secondary school.”

Prof Milne said opening up the entry criteria to include first-year students who are not straight out of school recognises that people of different ages take up university study. www.stuff.co.nz
