Tucker Scholarship
The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded the Mae S. and Raymond E. Tucker Memorial Nursing Scholarship to Natasha Lawhorne of Buena Vista.
The daughter of Milton and Yvonne Lawhorne, she has been a student at DSLCC since 2003 and will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing in May 2007. After graduation from DSLCC, Lawhorne plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing and would like to become a midwife.
Established in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Tucker, the scholarship will assist with Lawhorne’s tuition and book expenses for one year and is part of more than $68,000 the Educational Foundation has awarded for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Mrs. Tucker was a dedicated nurse who encouraged and supported many people in their pursuit of a nursing career. She was a member of the DSLCC Nursing Curriculum Advisory Committee, the Jackson River Technical Center Committee, served as the last chairperson of the C & O Hospital School of Nursing Scholarship Committee and was the Administrator of Liberty Nursing Home.
Mr. Tucker retried from Virginia Power after forty-three years of service and was a lifelong and active member of Central United Methodist Church. Very much a family man, he put great emphasis on education. After the death of his wife in 1993, Mr. Tucker and his daughters established the scholarship to honor Mrs. Tucker’s contributions to the nursing profession and to help others purse their dream of a nursing career.
A non-profit organization, the Educational Foundation seeks to enhance community awareness of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College; promote goodwill in the community by building relationships with individuals, businesses, and organizations; secure private contributions, bequests, and donations; and account for, manage and appreciate monies or property donated to the Foundation. In addition to the thousands of dollars given in student scholarships each year, the Foundation also provides support for College programs through the purchase of equipment and other materials, as well as assistance with other College activities.
It is governed by a Board of Directors composed of representatives from the College’s service area who volunteer their time and talents to support the mission of the College and to fulfill the goal of advancing the work of the Educational Foundation.
