Scholarships big winner at OSU golf fundraiser

The real winners of the Oklahoma State University Family & Friends Golf Scramble Saturday at Pheasant Run Golf Club won’t be known until May.

That’s when the Cherokee Strip chapter of the OSU Alumni Association will award seven scholarships to students from a four-county area — Garfield, Grant, Major and Alfalfa.

Saturday’s fund-raiser netted approximately $5,000 to the scholarship fund, according to chapter president Casey Felix.

“We had a great response,’’ she said. “These scholarships are very important. They help pay for at least a semester of tuition or books or both.’’

The club has raised some $25,000 for scholarships in the five-year history of the tournament. Some current scholarship recipients helped out at the tournament.

The tournament, which drew 29 teams, no doubt was helped by a cooling down of temperatures. Saturday’s high temperature was 93 degrees, compared to the 100-degree plus temperatures for the rest of the week.

“God loves a Cowboy,’’ Felix said. “We get great weather for this every year. We always have a great response. Everyone likes to come to play because it’s a great tournament and we have great hole sponsors.’’

The scholarship recipients are chosen by a committee from a list submitted from OSU. The club gave six $500 scholarships and two $1,000 scholarships last year. OSU matches the two $1,000 scholarships.

The only stipulation is the student must have at least one parent who is a member of the alumni association. A person does not need to be an OSU graduate to join the group.

Pistol Pete, the Cowboys’ mascot, was out to greet the alumni members and their children.

Pistol Pete will be returning Sept. 30 when the club holds a family day at Leonardo’s.

The Cowboy Caravan, where a number of Cowboy coaches speak, will return to Enid this summer, Felix said.

The Oklahoma Pork Council and Roberts Ranch supplied food for tournament entries.
