National Starch and Chemical Co. awards scholarships to five high school graduates
National Starch and Chemical Co. has presented its 16th annual scholarship program awards to five local 2006 high school graduates.
The $1,000 scholarships are awarded to a graduate of each high school in the Rowan-Salisbury Schools system who is planning to major in science or engineering in college.
They are Amanda Davenport, East Rowan High School; Ashley Megan Lefler, North Rowan High School; Kassie Lea Denton, Salisbury High School; John Edward Suther, South Rowan High School; and Bradley Peter Jarvis, West Rowan High School.
Davenport was a junior marshal at East Rowan, where she played tennis, performed in Broadway Revue and was a Scholar Athlete. Daughter of Kent and Leisa Davenport, she plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Lefler was a member of the National Honor Society and Anchor Club at North Rowan. Daughter of Janet and Jerry Menster, she plans to attend Western Carolina University in Cullowhee.
Denton, daughter of James and Shelia Denton, plans to attend N.C. State University in Raleigh. At Salisbury, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and varsity basketball, volleyball, softball and indoor track teams and Student Government Association representative.
Suther plans to attend N.C. State University in Raleigh. At South Rowan, he was a member of the National Honor Society, JROTC battalion commander, member of the Honor Guard and captain of the Rifle and Precision Drill teams. He was also a Boys State delegate. His parents are Tommy and Annette Suther.
Jarvis was a junior marshal and member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and varsity basketball team at West Rowan. Son of Raymond and Lori Jarvis, he plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
