Shipman Scholarships awarded to seven

Memorial scholarships in honor of William Dewey Shipman Sr. and Zenah Mae Clarida Shipman were awarded Sunday, August 28, during the regular morning services at St. James AME Zion Church in the Sandhill community near Bladenboro.

The seven recipients of this year’s scholarships are Tiffany Bradford, Tambra Grange, Tiffany Jacobs, Monica Jessup, Kayla Murphy, Tiffany Rhodes and Andreana Williams.

Candles in memory of Dewey and Zenah Shipman were lighted granddaughters Thedosia Williams and Matishika Shipman. Brunella Shipman and Rev. Cedric Mathis, pastor of the church, presented the $500 scholarships to each recipient following a tribute in song and praise dance by Karen Roseboro, Chantel Hines, Brianna McLean and Cheryl McLean.

Chairperson Willa Dean Shipman Williams presided over the ceremony.

The scholarships are to be used to defray educational expenses at a post-secondary institution of each recipient’s choice.

Bradford is a graduate of West Columbus High School and is now a freshman at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro where she is majoring in Psychology. She is the daughter of Bernice Bradford.

Grange is a graduate of East Bladen High School and is now a freshman at North Carolina A&T. She is majoring is Industrial Engineering. She is the daughter of Derrick and Bernestine Grange.

Jacobs is a Whiteville High graduate and is now a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she is majoring in Arts and Sciences. She is the daughter of Wanda Jacobs.

Jessup is a graduate of East Bladen High and is now a freshman at North Carolina A&T where she is majoring in Nursing. She is the daughter of Earl and Vilena Jessup.

Murphy is a West Bladen High School graduate and is now a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where she is majoring is Speech Pathology. She is the daughter of Drusilla Murphy.

Rhodes is an East Bladen graduate and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from North Carolina A&T in May, 2004. She is currently pursuing a BS degree in Graphic Communication Systems with a concentration in Computer Aid Drafting and Design from North Carolina A&T. She has also taken classes at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is the daughter of Leroy and Annie M. Rhodes.

Williams is a graduate of Whiteville High School and is now a senior at North Carolina A&T where she is majoring in Marketing and pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree. She is the daughter of Willa Dean Shipman Williams and Theodore L. Williams.

Shipman Scholarship Committee members are Diane Bellamy, Albert Roseboro, Norma Martin, Wiley Ward (honorary member), Rev. Mathis and Willa Dean Williams, the chairperson.

Annual fundraising will be held on Saturday, November 26, at 5 p. m. at the church with Rev. Vincent Meares as guest speaker.
