Scholarships for 40 students

STUDENTS from the University of the South Pacific were given “All Rounder Scholarships” at a function at the University last week.

The students, who are representatives of various sports, were given the scholarships as they were already enrolled in programmes with the university.

It was a fun-filled night for these sports people as most would now be able to pursue their sporting career and academic qualifications.

The 40 students were given the awards, which co-ordinator Margaret Eastgate said marked a milestone in the history of the university.

She said the young people were not only recipients of the scholarships but pioneers of the programme as well.

However, she said their success would impact on the growth and development of the programme.

Ms Eastgate said the university was committed to developing each scholar holistically.

Vice chancellor professor Anthony Tarr said the scholarship gave talented sporting people an opportunity to realise both their sporting and academic potential.

He said the programme was aimed to enhance the knowledge of the university within the region and open up avenues whereby the best sports people could be kept locally to develop their vocation or career through higher education.

Mr Tarr congratulated the students who had received awards in netball, rugby, soccer and volleyball.
