College Grads Bike Across U.S. For CC Scholarship

Two recent Colorado College graduates are riding across the country on bicycles to raise money for a special scholarship at their alma mater.

Robin Dunn and Ari Stiller-Shulman both benefited from merit- and need-based financial aid when they were students at CC, and they say they now want to give back to a school that has given them a first-rate education.

As seniors, Dunn and Stiller-Shulman started the college’s first scholarship initiated and funded by students. They raised $25,000 for the AppreCCiate scholarship.

After graduation both men took to the road to drum up donations for the scholarship from CC grads across the country. Donors receive a wristband with the name of the scholarship on it.

“Over the course of our lifetimes and the lifetimes of the students who are giving, (our goal is) that we will be able to see this fund, the AppreCCiate Scholarship, really appreciate in value until it is large enough to make a significant difference and make CC more accessible,” Dunn said.

When CBS4 recently interviewed Dunn and Stiller-Shulman, they had traveled about 1,881 miles and said they had 2,500 or so to go. They started their nearly 5,000 mile trip in Oregon and hope to hit their fundraising goal in Virginia.

Colorado College president Richard Celeste said he’s impressed by the dedication the two alums are showing.

“We work hard to try to encourage our students to begin to think about how do you give back to an institution like Colorado College, and Robin and his pal Ari devised one of the most unique ways of doing it that you can imagine,” Celeste said.

Dunn and Stiller-Shulman said of the odder moments of their trip so far was being invited to ride in the Lumberjack Parade in New Meadows, Idaho.
