Grant would help with college credits
The cost of a college education rises year after year.
But with the help of a grant, Red Lion high school seniors and their families might be able to get financial help and get a head start on their college education.
Red Lion Senior High School Principal Charlie Humberd said the district has applied for a grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Education that would help offset the cost of college credits for seniors interested in taking college classes while still in high school.
The funding for such a grant, if approved, will be based on the number of students participating, Humberd said.
Red Lion has about 20 students who may be participating this year.
Students and families could be reimbursed for tuition, fees and the cost of books at Harrisburg Area Community College, Penn State York or York College.
In order to receive credits, the colleges themselves will have requirements, Humberd said. Some requirements may be a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, earning a C average in college courses, or a minimum score on the SAT.
Students will be allowed to take three credits per semester.
The district hopes to know by this spring whether it will receive a grant through the Department of Education and for how much, Humberd said.
