Local student named Coca-Cola scholarship finalist

WEAVERVILLE – Benjamin Anders of North Buncombe High school has been named a finalist for the 2007 Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation scholarship.

This year there were approximately 88,000 applicants with 2,100 semifinalists selected in December. Only 250 of these 2,100 were selected as finalists nationwide. As a Coca-Cola finalist, Anders will attend a Scholars Weekend in Atlanta April 12-15. Anders will be interviewed by the Coca-Cola Foundation National Selection Committee for one of 50 $20,000 scholarships. The other 200 finalists will each receive a $10,000 scholarship.

Anders is the son of Dee Dee and Tom Anders and has served his community in various ways throughout high school. He currently serves as president of the YMCA of Asheville Leaders club, president of the Key Club and Beta Club, is the teen representative on the YMCA advisory board and has volunteered for several organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Mission Hospitals, Riverlink and MANNA FoodBank. He was recently named 2006 YMCA of Western North Carolina Youth Volunteer of the Year.

He will attend a four-year college and is hoping to pursue a career as an orthodontist.
