Hartland chamber awards scholarship to HHS graduate

The Hartland Area Chamber of Commerce presented a $1,000 scholarship to Hartland High School senior Jennifer Pittel earlier this month. This is the 16th consecutive year the chamber has awarded the scholarship.

“In selecting the winner of the Hartland Area Chamber Scholarship, the chamber looks for a high school senior who demonstrates leadership, has been a good student throughout his or her academic career, and who places a value on community service and personal growth,” said Sharon Sutis, president of the HACC. “Jennifer was particularly outstanding in all of these areas.”

Pittel has been on the honor roll throughout elementary and middle school, has achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher all four years of high school, and was a member of the national honor society.

She also donated approximately 500 hours of community service, and has been involved in DECA for two years, achieving qualifications at the district and state level each year, this year earning an invitation to the national competition.

In addition to extracurricular involvement with DECA, Pittel has demonstrated leadership skills by serving as circulation manager and editor-in-chief of the Hartland High School newspaper and captain of the Livingston All-Star Pom team.

Pittel was described as “a very serious and focused student,” “a high achiever,” and someone who “works very hard” and whose “actions are very professional.”

“With such resounding recommendations and dedicated achievement, the Hartland Area Chamber Scholarship Committee all agreed that the winner of this year’s scholarship demonstrated the kind of character and qualities we seek to propagate in our community,” said Julia Liljegren, executive director of the HACC.

In addition to the $1,000 scholarship, Pittel’s name will be added the commemorative plaque showcasing the names of all winners of the scholarship and that is displayed at the chamber office.
