Scholarship program seeks applicants

The Michigan Junior Miss Scholarship Program is accepting applications. An orientation meeting is set later this month.

The program is open to all high school seniors graduating in 2008 who have no local qualifying program available to them.

The program will be held March 29, 2008, in Ann Arbor. All participants will arrive in Ann Arbor March 24 and those who need a place to stay will be housed with host families in the area.

Michigan’s Junior Miss will go on to compete in America’s Junior Miss program, in Mobile, Ala., in June.

The orientation meeting will be held 1 p.m. Sept. 29 at Jan’s Dance Connection, 26032 Ford Road, in Dearborn Heights. The Southern Michigan At-Large Program will be held Oct. 27. Participants must reserve a seat if they plan to attend the orientation meeting by e-mailing jmsickle@comcast.net.

There also will be a Northern Michigan At-Large Program Nov. 17. An orientation meeting will be held Oct. 20 at First Methodist Church in Alpena. The application deadline for the Northern At-Large Program is Oct. 14 and the deadline for the Southern At-Large Program is Sept. 22.

The categories in which each contestant is evaluated are scholastics, interview, talent, fitness and self-expression. Contestants must have a grade point average of 3.3 or higher.

The program’s goal is to honor young women who excel in these areas and to encourage them to continue on the path of excellence by completing their college educations and assuming roles of leadership in their communities and professions, thereby setting examples for other young women to follow.

To apply for either program, visit the Web site www.ajm.org.

AJM, the oldest and largest scholarship program for high school senior girls, makes available over $200,000 in college scholarships annually.
