SMU gets $5M for scholarship program
Southern Methodist University in Dallas said Monday it has received a $5 million gift from Dallas business leader Edwin L. Cox.
The money will be used for merit-based scholarships for students in SMU’s Edwin L. Cox School of Business.
SMU said the gift also will serve as a challenge gift toward reaching a $10 million fundraising goal to create an endowment fund for the Cox business school’s merit scholarship program.
“Ed Cox has supported SMU generously with his time, talents and resources for more than 50 years,” said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. “It is characteristic that he would step up to fund one of the University’s greatest priorities — the support of high-achieving students. We are grateful for his vision and generosity.”
The scholars program provides scholarships for qualified first-year students interested in pursuing a business major.
Cox is chairman of the Edwin L. Cox Co., a holding company for his private investments. He previously served as chairman of Cox Oil and Gas Inc., which became Cox Exploration, an independent oil and gas exploration and production company.
