Matching grant sought for minority scholarship

The State Government should immediately announce the matching grant for pre-matriculation scholarship for minorities, S. Sathik, general secretary, Organisation of Muslim Educational Institutions and Associations in Tamil Nadu (OMEIAT), said on Saturday.

Dr. Sathik, former Vice-Chancellor of Madras University , said that if the Government did not make the announcement before the end of this fiscal, funds allocated by the Centre would return to the national exchequer. The organisation was striving to educate the Moulavis in mosques on the importance of education.

Minister of Youth Welfare, Environment and Wakf Board T.P.M. Mohideen Khan said he would act as a bridge between the community and the government to solve issues the Muslims faced. Activities of a few individuals led to criticism of the whole community.

U. Md. Khalilullah, president, OMEIAT, appealed to the Minister to revive Urdu schools for boys and girls. A few years ago, more than 100 schools were functioning in the city. Every ward should have one school, he said.

Prizes were distributed to teachers, school toppers and parents.
