Scholarship applications

The following organizations are accepting scholarship applications from graduating Hernando County high school seniors:

- Spring Hill Art League is accepting applications through April 1. Several $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to those who will be continuing their higher education in the visual arts. Applications are available at all county high school guidance departments.

Winners will be chosen through a portfolio-submission process with interviews being conducted April 17 at the high schools. The scholarships will be awarded in May at the art league’s annual Awards Potluck Dinner. Home-schooled seniors and those in private schools should contact Louise at 796-1189. - The Hernando County Fair Association is offering scholarships up to $3,000 to recent Hernando County graduates and members of the Class of 2008. Applications, including all documentation and official transcripts, must be received by April 11.

Completed applications can be hand-delivered to the fair office at 6436 S Broad St., Brooksville call the office at 796-4552 for staff hours, or mailed to the Fair Association at P.O. Box 10456, Brooksville, FL 34603 (mark envelopes “Attention: Scholarship Committee”).

Applications are available at www.hernandocountyfair.com , or by calling either Joy Jackson at 796-4552 or Nancy Moores at 754-4433. The scholarships are made possible through proceeds from the annual Hernando County Fair.

- Two Hernando Audubon Steve Fickett Scholarships will be awarded for $1,000 each. Those who are planning studies and careers in earth sciences, particularly students who have participated in environmental clubs, are encouraged to apply.

Interested students should write a 300- to 500-word essay on “The Importance of Caring for Our Environment and Our Natural Resources.” Students should submit their essays, a copy of their transcript and resume by April 4 to Elaine Maywalt, Hernando Audubon, 5194 Mosquero Road, Spring Hill, FL 34606.

For information, students should speak with their high school guidance counselors.

- The Glen Lakes Garden Club will award a $1,000 horticulture scholarship. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must carry at least a 2.5 grade-point-average and be planning on majoring in college in a field such as horticulture, landscape design, environmental studies, botany, turf management or a related field.

Application forms are available in the guidance offices of all Hernando County high schools. Students in private schools or who are home-schooled can access the Springstead High School Web site and download a scholarship form at hcsb.k12.fl.us/shs. All applications must be received by April 2.

- Hernando Builders Association’s SPIKE Club will offer scholarships to those continuing their education in the construction/building field, such as engineers, carpenters, surveyors, bricklayers, plumbers and electricians.

The application deadline is April 25. Three $500 scholarships will be awarded.

- The Brooksville Music Club will award scholarships to students will be in their junior or senior year in the fall of 2008. These scholarships are for private music lessons to those who plan to major in music when they go to college.

Applications are available from guidance counselors and music instructors at each Hernando County high school, or by calling Louise at 796-1189.
