College Scholarships

Two are available from business group
The Route 40 Business Association is offering a scholarship for graduating seniors from Joppatowne, Edgewood, Aberdeen and Havre de Grace High schools.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a degree or certificate in a business-related field.

Applications, with a letter including college choice and status, community activities, awards and recognition, work and related achievements, career and educational goals and financial need for the scholarship, are required by April 7.

Credit union has 14 offers for funding
HAR-CO Maryland Federal Credit Union has 14 scholarships available, totaling $18,000 in three categories, for all graduating Harford County high school seniors who will be attending college in fall 2008.

Available scholarships are:

• One $1,000 scholarship to a student at each high school in Harford County, public and private. Applicants must be HAR-CO members, carry a minimum GPA of 2.75, live in Harford County and have been accepted to a four-year college or university.

• The scholarship to Harford Community College offers $5,000 to a graduating senior who has been accepted and will attend Harford Community College full time. Applicants must be HAR-CO members and Harford County residents with a minimum GPA of 2.25.

• The $1,000 Edward V. Goetz Memorial Environmental Science Scholarship is for seniors pursuing environmental studies. Applicants must be seniors who are current HAR-CO members and plan to enter an advanced environmental program in the next year. A minimum GPA of 2.00 is required.

Applications are available at HAR-CO Credit Union branches, high school guidance offices or online at www.harcocu.org. Deadline is April 25. HAR-CO membership requires a $5 deposit to qualify.

Two delegates have information on aid
Dels. Richard K. Impallaria and Patrick L. McDonough, both Harford Republicans, have announced that information on student financial aid for the 2008-2009 academic year is available.

The Maryland Higher Education Commission and the U.S. Department of Education have published pamphlets with information on sources for college funding, including scholarships, grants and loans.

Copies of the Federal Student Financial Aid form also are available at high schools and online.

Residents of the 7th District who wish to receive a House of Delegates scholarship application can call the delegates’ office at 410-841-3334. Delegates’ scholarships are not renewable, so recipients must reapply annually.

Businesses and organizations that provide scholarships for Harford and Baltimore County students also can give their information to Impallaria and McDonough, who will share that with students.

Glassman accepting applications for 2008
State Sen. Barry Glassman, a Harford Republican, is taking applications for his 2008 Senatorial Scholarship Program from students in the 35th District.

Applications are available at Glassman’s Web site, www.barry glassman.com. The scholarship is open to high school seniors and adults pursuing higher education.

The deadline for applications is April 30.

Cooke foundation seeks applicants
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Scholars Program is seeking applicants for its nationwide scholarship program.

Seventh-graders with financial need are welcome to apply. Successful applicants receive educational advice, financial support for educational opportunities during high school and the chance to win a college scholarship.

Deadline for applications is May 5.
