Scholarship Foundation gearing up for banquet

The Roxie Douglas Scholarship Foundation is gearing up for its 12th annual scholarship banquet.

The banquet will be on Aug. 16 at the Samuel Walker Houston Cultural Center in Huntsville and will honor scholarship recipients and local humanitarians.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Ressie Echols and C.J. Flowers, both former day care students of Roxie Douglas. Each will receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

The guest speaker for this year’s banquet will be Air Force Col. Samuel Douglas, son of Roxie Douglas and a graduate of Huntsville High School and Grambling State University.

“Douglas is a great advocate of educational excellence,” said Carmen Irving, director of the foundation. “He has helped support the foundation and the learning institute with $10,000 in donations over the last 12 years.”

Tickets for the banquet are on sale now. In addition to a guest speaker, the banquet will also include gospel music from local bands and barbecue.

In addition to the banquet, the foundation is also currently seeking donations to fund its math and reading programs for fall 2008.

As part of its fundraising, the foundation is seeking local businesses and individuals to place ads in a 2008 souvenir book, which will be on display at area businesses as well as at the scholarship banquet.
