Princeton High School senior Ricardo Weaver has been selected as one of 37 winners nationwide of a $6,000 College Educational Scholarship by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Tennis & Education Foundation (T&EF).

The Foundation has granted 54 high school students a variety of college scholarships this spring, totaling $287,000.

The 37 honorees were selected from applicants throughout the country on the basis of their commitment to academic success, their local community and the game of tennis.

Pembroke High School isn’t quite done with celebrating “firsts.”

The young school, re-established in 2003 when the district split from Silver Lake, is marking a lot of new experiences that come with growing a new school, and on May 31 it will celebrate another of those milestones: the first graduating class to have spent all four years at Pembroke.
The PHS Class of 2008 will receive their diplomas on Saturday, May 31, during a 10 a.m. ceremony at the town green. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the high school gymnasium.

The approximately hour-and-a-half ceremony will begin with the usual “Pomp and Circumstance” — played by the PHS band — as well as the National Anthem and PHS alma mater led by the Chamber Singers and the Pledge of Allegiance led by senior class vice president Kayla Higgins. Read more…

Gov. Matt Blunt’s funding plan for Missouri colleges and universities, technology centers and experiment stations remains on track. The initiative provides more than $2.1 million to benefit students around the state, promote technology and innovation, and help secure Missouri’s role as a higher education leader. The $2,174,009 payment distribution is the eighth of the $335 million total that Gov. Blunt secured for Missouri students and classrooms through his Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative.

“We need to invest in better classrooms at our colleges and universities to ensure that our students have the tools and skills to compete for jobs in our global economy,” Gov. Blunt says. Read more…

University College Access Network of Richland County (U-CAN) has received a $10,000 grant as part of the Invest in Success program. This grant is designed for community-based Ohio College Access Network members to add or enhance programs or strengthen their overall operations.

The Ohio College Access Network announced awards of more than $200,000 Monday, which included U-CAN of Richland County’s grant. Read more…

The Island Institute announced today that it has awarded $125,000 in college scholarships to 59 island students who are pursuing post-secondary studies at colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools in Maine and around the country. Almost $60,000 more than last year’s award total, this one-time special distribution, made possible by the generosity of the Institute’s donors and members, celebrates the organization’s 25th anniversary and brings to more than $525,000 the total dollar amount of awards made since the scholarship program’s inception in 1990. MasterCard Worldwide and U21Global, an online graduate school, have announced the joint scholarship progra-mme for women in the travel and tourism industry. The programme was launched in 2006 to empower women executives through education to realise their full potential. It comprises 20 scholarships for the U21Global Postgraduate Diploma of Business Administration.

The programme is intended for graduates who want to develop skills in management and, marketing of tourism and travel products and programmes. It is designed to provide participants with a solid foundation in core management subjects, and is aimed at providing students with a firm grounding in basic management capabilities. Read more…

Regional executive vice president Dan Taylor recently announced the recipient of the Scott Valley Bank scholarship to College of the Siskiyous for 2008. The full scholarship was awarded to Nicole Luiz, a graduating senior from Etna High School.

The Scott Valley Bank scholarship program awards funds for tuition, fees, and books for two years of study in business or finance to one student from the College of the Siskiyous attendance area each year.

High school classmates of Vu Nguyen, whose friendship with the fallen Sacramento Sheriff’s Deputy was cemented with a cross-country road trip as teenagers, have organized a scholarship fund in his name.

“He was a person full of integrity and honesty,” said longtime friend Mike Henderson. “We did not want him to die in vain — to not have something to keep his memory alive.”

Henderson is helping to organize the Vu Nguyen Memorial Scholarship for Modesto High School students.

Serri Graslie, a sophomore at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., is the second recipient of the Peg Sagen Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship honors Peggy Sagen, the former editor of the Rapid City Journal. Sagen died of cancer in August of 2006.

Graslie, a 2006 graduate of Central High School, spent a summer as an intern at the Journal while she was in high school and knew Sagen. Read more…

Students pursing a master’s or doctoral degree in a nursing specialty are invited to apply for the Thomas Candler Scholarship.

The $1,500 one-year scholarship honors the founding member of the Quad-Cities Area Advance Practice Nurses and Physician Assistant Alliance.

Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better, complete an application form, submit a 250-word essay and provide two letters of recommendation. The application deadline is June 1.
